Syria stresses the need to eliminate weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East

New York, (ST) – Syria’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh, affirmed that Syria continues cooperating with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), and regrets the attempts of some to distort this cooperation.

Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh, during a Security Council session said that, Syria stresses the need to eliminate weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East because these weapons threaten regional and international peace and security.

 “Syria renews its unequivocal condemnation of the use of chemical weapons by anyone, anytime, anywhere and under any circumstances”. Sabbagh added.

Ambassador Sabbagh continued that, the information of the initial declaration and subsequent declarations are complete and accurate, and Syria is ready to work transparently and objectively with the declaration’s evaluation team. He added that Syria regrets that some countries have turned the OPCW into a platform to target specific countries
