DAMASCUS, (ST) – Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Suleiman al -Abbas and the Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa in Damascus Sean Benfeldt recently discussed here ways of future cooperation in the field of oil and gas , refining, mineral resources investment and benefiting from the vast experience of South Africa in this domain.
The two sides discussed the possibility of investment in the manufacturing of phosphate -based industries, the development of this industry and the participation in the existing projects of refineries in Syria, particularly the Alfrekles joint refinery project with the participation of South African companies in the available investment opportunities in the future at the stage of rehabilitation of the oil and mineral wealth.
The minister welcomed the companies of the Republic of South Africa, especially since the ministry began to draw up plans for the rehabilitation of infrastructure and the resumption of activity in the field of excavation and exploration in the near future.
For his part, Mr. Benfeldt expressed his desire to brief on investment opportunities in the oil and gas industry and mineral resources to communicate with his own companies and create opportunities for cooperation to the benefit of the two countries.
Later on, Minister of Finance Dr. Ismail Ismail and the Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa in Damascus Sean Benfeldt recently discussed here ways to strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation in the areas of tax and customs between the two countries.
The two sides agreed following up related procedures to sign the agreement of Prevention double taxation between the two countries that was adopted in 2010.
The Minister of Finance suggested signing an agreement for cooperation and mutual assistance in customs matters in addition to discuss a draft agreement for cooperation in the exchange of experiences and the development of skills in the area of finance and banking.
Earlier the Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade , Dr. Khader Orfali met Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa and discussed ways to develop bilateral cooperation and activating the agreements signed between the two countries to increase trade and investment opportunities in the reconstruction phase.
