Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Faisal Al-Mikdad on Tuesday signed the Framework Agreement of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), thereby Syria became the 103rd Member State of the alliance.
India’s Ambassador to Syria Mahender Singh Kanyal attended the signing ceremony.
The primary objective of the alliance is to work for efficient consumption of solar energy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. This initiative was first proposed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a speech in November 2015 at Wembley Stadium, London.
In a statement following the signing ceremony, Al-Mikdad spoke about the massive damage caused to the electricity sector in Syria due to the terrorist attacks that targeted the power plants and the infrastructure of the electricity networks.
He also noted the tragic impacts of the inhumane unilateral coercive measures imposed on Syria and that affected all walks of life, mainly on the energy sector.
“Jointing the International Solar Alliance will hopefully open the door for carrying out joint projects that contribute to solving the problems of the electricity sector in Syria,” the minister added.
He hailed the Syrian-Indian cooperation, pointing out that the distinguished and strong relations between the two countries should be invested for the good of the peoples of Syria and India.
On his part, the Indian Ambassador expressed his happiness over Syria’s joining the alliance, stressing that Syria can benefit from this move in supporting the country’s electrical energy sector and supplying it with new sustainable resources.
He reiterated the need to boost the economic relations between Syria and India.
