Syria’s Vice-President: we are still able to restore damaged heritage

Vice-President Dr.Najah al-Attar has affirmed that Syrians are able to perform miracles and to protect and revive heritage despite the terror attacks on historical sites in the country.

Her remark was made during the opening ceremony of a documentary exhibition held Tuesday at the Faculty of Architecture in Damascus under the title “Vision…Palmyra After Liberation”.  

She said that the Syrians, who had rehabilitated Palmyra’s sites throughout history by using simple tools are now able to rehabilitate them.

On his part, Minister of Higher Education Mohammad Amer al-Mardini referred to the importance of academic work in saving the heritage of Palmyra city.

“The crisis in the country has developed the ideas of university students and linked them tolabour work,” he added.

World cultural city

The Cuban Ambassador to Damascus Rogerio Manuel Santana Rodriguez said that the exhibition proves that Syria will achieve victory over terrorism in the future, indicating that Palmyra city [Tadmor] is a world cultural city.

He expressed sorrow over the destructive acts carried out by what he described as the ‘American Imperialist tools’.

Damascus University Rector Mohammad Hassan al-Kerdi underlined the need to protect heritage in Syria in the light of the current circumstances.

“The university has worked on improving scientific research related to heritage and tourism through holding workshops with the participation of specialists and students ,” he said.

Two-month long Workshop

Over the past two months, the first year students and the post graduate ones in the Faculty of Antiquities and Museums made portrayals documenting historical sites in Palmyra city before and after the terrorist organizations’ attacks.

These portrayals are exposed in the exhibition held by the Faculty of Architecture, the Higher Institute of Regional Planning, the Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums and Engineers Union.

Over 200 university students took part in the workshop.
