MOSCOW,(ST) _ Russia ‘s former Foreign Minister Yevgeny Primakov stressed that practices that seemed to be directed towards democracy in Syria gave birth to a form of opposition linked to internationally affiliated radical Islamists groups.
Primakov, who is a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and president of Mercury Club Forum, considered that that the tragedy in Syria is another manifestation of the conflict between moderate and extremist trends.
During a meeting for the Forum, Primakov considered the imbalanced situation in the Middle East began since the American invasion of Iraq , where a bloody conflict raged and what is happening in Syria today is but another conflict of that rift.
“It is wrong to look at the Islamic forces in the Middle East as one homogeneous mass, since not only moderate groups are existed there, but also , fundamentalists and extremists who seek to impose ideas and principles that are far from Islam , as viewed by all members of society,” Primakov added.
He warned that the future of the Middle East and North Africa is not only linked to the current policy of great powers in the world, but also the proportion of power shared between moderates and extremists.
