Syria’s Heroes of Independence Day;An Honorable Icon in the History of Struggle and Resistance in Syria

The memory of the French colonizer’s evacuation from the Syrian land bears deep and rooted meanings, filled with pride in the legacy of the Syrian people’s struggle, sacrifices and heroism in confronting the forces of colonialism and domination.

On this day, Syrians recall names and photos of their heroes of struggle against colonialism, such as Youssef Al-Azma, Ibrahim Hanano, Saleh Al-Ali, Sultan Pasha Al-Atrash and others, as those heroes have become icons of honour for an era renown for its struggle and resistance against the brutal colonizer.
Secretary of Veterans Department in Aleppo, Major General Muhammad Zuhair Serafi stresses that Independence Day is such a dear memory to the hearts of the Syrians, as it constitutes an important stage in the history of Syria, namely the evacuation of the oppressive colonizer from the Syrian land.
Serafi affirms that with their strong will and steadfastness, the sons of Syria were able to defeat the French colonizer, achieving victory and independence so that we would obtain freedom thanks to the sacrifices made by the brave heroes defending the homeland.
Colonel Mohamed Mamoun Al-Khidr states that Independence Day highlights pride in our past and dignity in our present, as every single Syrian relives feelings of pride when remembering the most wonderful pages of sacrifice, our heroes in the past had narrated by repelling the French colonialist.

Khidr goes on to say, “On this day, we remember the heroic symbols of independence such as Sultan Pasha Al-Atrash, Ibrahim Hanano, Saleh Al-Ali and others, telling them: In the same way you had defeated French colonialism, here we are, your grandchildren today, defeating the new invaders and purifying the homeland from the abomination of their terror. The spirit of our innocent martyrs is dwelling amongst us, reminding us of their pure blood that has irrigated the soil of the homeland to preserve its pride, dignity and independence. “
