Syria, Russia review cooperation in the fields of energy, oil, water

DAMASCUS, Jun.15, (ST)- Within the framework of the 4th  joint Syrian-Russian meeting to follow up on the international conference on the return of the refugees and displaced Syrians, a meeting was held on Wednesday at the Ministry of Electricity in the presence of representatives from the ministries of electricity, oil, mineral resources, water resources, the Planning and International Cooperation commission and the Russian Ministry of Energy.

The participants in the meeting discussed the long-term future means of cooperation related to completing studies for the development of the energy and electricity sector, the provision of non-traditional fuels, and the utilization of potentials to operate power plants to reach renewable energies.

The Deputy Minister of Electricity, Nidal Qarmousha, stated the meeting dealt with the possibilities of cooperation with Russian companies in the field of implementing and financing a number of projects, stressing the importance of Investment Law No. 18 of 2021, which allows businessmen and investors to cooperate with Russian companies to establish traditional power plants or energies renewable, thermoelectric and others, and selling electricity to the commercial or industrial sectors in Syria.

While the Deputy Minister of Water,  Bassel Kamal El-Din, asserted the need to invest in the field of dams, water and irrigation networks, building information centers, linking centers to each other, studying water basins and developing a groundwater monitoring network.

Deputy Chairwoman of the Planning and International Cooperation Commission Thoraya Idilbi, referred to the importance of meeting with the Russian side and relevant institutions to set a framework that achieves the common interest of both sides so that it can be implemented in a short period of time.

The representative of the Russian Ministry of Energy indicated that the ministry is following up on cooperation issues in all areas and fields, especially the achievement of the general plan for water and energy in Syria.
