Syria, Russia Discuss Efforts to Achieve Progress in Forming Constitutional Committee

DAMASCUS, (ST)- Continuous efforts to achieve progress in the political process in Syria, mainly regarding the formation of the committee for discussing the constitution, were the main theme of President Bashar Al-Assad’s meeting on Friday with Russian President’s Special Envoy to Syria Alexander Lavrentiev, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin and the accompanying delegation.

The two sides agreed on continuous coordination and intensive work regarding next steps leading to achieving the hoped-for results as regards forming the constitutional committee. They stressed the need not allow the countries which try to prolong the terrorist war on Syria, to place obstacles before this process.

Talks also dealt with developments of the war on terrorism and the latest terrorist attacks launched from Idleb against surrounding areas.

The Russian side affirmed its support for the Syrian Arab Army in confronting these attacks and retaliating against any provocations by the terrorist groups positioned in Idleb. It reiterated Syria’s right to defend its citizens, preserve its territorial integrity and entirely eliminate terrorism.

Regional and international developments as well as the strategic relations between Syria and Russia were also discussed.
