Syria restores full membership in ISESCO

The Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) announced Syria’s return to full membership after years of hiatus.

This announcement was followed by an online meeting with the Director-General of Antiquities and Museums Anas Haj Zidan, the Director of the ISESCO Center for Islamic World Heritage Webber Ndoro, the Center’s program experts Bilal Chebbi and Mohammed Al-Absi and the Director of World Heritage Sites at the Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums Lina Qatifan.

Future cooperation between the Organization and the Directorate was discussed.

During the meeting, Bilal Chebbi emphasized the importance of Syria’s return to the organization, noting that the decision reflects the organization’s commitment to supporting member states in preserving their cultural and scientific heritage.

He also refereed that a technical mission will visit Syria and assess the technical and logistical needs of the Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums, with the aim of strengthening its capacities in the areas of cultural heritage conservation and museum management.

Dr. Hajj Zidan welcomed this step, emphasizing that Syria’s return to ISESCO will open new horizons for cooperation.

He emphasized that the technical visit will contribute to strengthening efforts to preserve Syrian heritage, especially in light of the challenges facing the country due to the war it has gone through.
