Syria reiterates that unilateral sanctions hamper efforts to fight coronavirus

Syria has reiterated that the unilateral coercive sanctions being imposed on it are illegal and immoral, not to mention their violation of human rights and that they hinder the fight against coronavirus .  
 
In a letter sent by its permanent representative to the United Nations in Geneva Hosameddin Alaa, to Michelle Bachelet, High Commissioner for Human Rights, Syria made it clear that the restrictions being imposed on it hamper the efforts of the Syrian government to fight coronovirus. 
 
“These restrictions hinder the Syrian Health Ministry’s efforts to obtain necessary medical equipment for hospitals and health centers to detect Coronavirus cases and to offer medical care to infections,” Alaa said. 
 
He emphasized that the US and EU insistence on resorting to these illegal and immoral restrictions breaches human rights, hinders the implementation of 2030 sustainable development goals and contradicts world solidarity that aim to fight Coronavirus pandemic and to overcome its economic and social implications. 
 
Alaa underscored the need to concentrate on lifting the sanctions immediately and on the negative impacts of sanctions as they prevent people from their rights to live and to get medicine and food. 
 
He warned against the effects of Coronavirus crisis on the Syrian people in the occupied Golan as the Israeli authorities continue with violating human rights and obstructing the flow of medical equipment in this fight against this pandemic.
