Syria receives three ambulances, five mobile clinics from WHO to support the country’s healthcare and emergency systems

DAMASCUS, (ST)-The Health Ministry on Sunday received three ambulances and five mobile clinics presented by the World health Organization (WHO) to support the healthcare and emergency systems in Syria in the light of the challenges that resulted from the unilateral western coercive measures imposed on the Syrian health sector and the Coronavirus pandemic.

In a statement to journalists after receiving the WHO aid, Health Minister Hasan al-Ghabbash said that this aid will contribute to securing support for the Syrian emergency system, a large part of which has been destroyed by terrorism during the past years, indicating that a protocol was signed with the WHO to support and revive this system.

He added that the ministry seeks investing all forms of medical aid properly to serve all citizens, noting that a program was set up by the Directorate of Emergency and Preparedness to use the aid in remote areas.

The Minister hailed the WHO’s permanent contribution to supporting and assisting the health sector in Syria in coordination with the Health Ministry, including  providing technical support and medical equipment and enhancing the skills of the medical staff. 

 On his part, the WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean Ahmad al-Manzari, said that the WHO’s delegation’s visit to Syria aims at specifying the challenges and assessing the needs of the Syrian medical sector.

He pointed out that the provided aid aims at meeting the needs of the health system in emergency services, whether in terms of dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic or meeting the Syrian citizens’ health needs.

Al-Manzari stressed that the organization continuously seeks to have more cooperation with the Ministry of Health and concerned authorities in Syria in order to strengthen the country’s response and emergency program which has been exposed to many challenges and has suffered shortage of supplies over the past period.

 The WHO Representative in Syria Akjemal Magtymova, on her part, confirmed that the organization has been working closely with the Ministry of Health for many years in order to respond to the country’s health needs and to enhance cooperation. “This aid is part of the WHO assistance to strengthen the emergency system in Syria,” she indicated.
