Syria participates in the regional technical meeting on education for sustainable development

Damascus, (ST) – Syria participated onWednesday in the work of the Arab Regional Technical Meeting on Education for Sustainable Development for 2030. This Meeting was organized by the United Nations Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization “UNESCO” virtually.

The meeting aimed to discuss the specific needs and approaches adopted and to encourage member states in the Arab region to commit to implementing the goals of education for sustainable development. This meeting especially also aimed at launching and developing special country initiatives, and providing technical guidance to member states regarding future prospects at the regional and national levels.

In a speech by the Minister of Education, Dr. Darem Tabbaa, the head of the Syrian National Committee for UNESCO, which was delivered by the Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Riad Tayfour, Tayfour stressed that achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals requires resolvingdevelopment issues in new ways that address national and regional challenges, especially those related to the effects of wars and global hegemony.

Tayfour suggested making a global appeal to stop the environmental deterioration in the region as a result of wars and political and economic pressures exerted on its people and work to secure factors of stability by educating them. He stressed that it should be interest of the issues of quality and sustainable development through the great efforts of the concerned national authorities and keenness to achieve further progress.

Tayfour indicated that, the Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform considered that education at all levels is a way to establish a rural community that manages natural resources in a sustainable manner and one of the important means to address the problems resulting from climate changes.

Tayfour said that, the Ministry of Culture was keen to open adult education courses through education departments and centers for them in all governorates.

Tayfour indicated that the Syrian Trust for Development, as a partner and representative of the local community, has launched several programs, the most important of which is the “Masar Program” for children from 5 to 15 years of age. It also launched the “Community Beacons Program”, which are the main points of influence through which the Syrian Trust for Development seeks to Creating positive change within the surrounding communities.

This meeting comes within the framework of the follow-up to the outcomes of the World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development 2030, which was held virtually from 17-19 May.
