Syria participates in the Fifth International Conference of Speakers of Parliaments in Vienna

Vienna (ST): With the participation of a delegation from the Syrian Arab Republic and the attendance of more than 100 speakers of world parliament and about 800 participants, the Fifth World Conference of Speakers of International Parliaments opened yesterday in the Austrian capital Vienna.

The head of the Arab, Foreign and Expatriate Relations Committee in the People’s Assembly, head of the delegation, Boutros Marjane, stressed in his intervention during a discussion session of the conference that the unjust siege and unilateral coercive measures imposed on the Syrian people affect all areas of life and increase the suffering of citizens, calling for work to be lifted and ended.

The Syrian delegation is scheduled to continue participating in the conference’s meetings, where the participants will discuss issues of sustainable development and other issues of concern to international peace and security.

The agenda of the two-day conference includes parliamentary and international topics and issues, and the sessions include panel discussions on specific topics such as gender equality, the Corona pandemic, climate change, transparency and security of parliaments and global governance, in addition to focusing on parliamentary dialogue to create effective pluralism that will ensure peace and sustainable development.

On the sidelines of the conference, the Women’s Summit (the thirteenth summit of women parliamentarians) will be held, which will look at evaluating developments in light of the Corona pandemic and its effects on women and girls, and searching for targeted measures to find solutions to deal with this pandemic in a gender-equitable manner.

The outcome of the talks will be included in the deliberations of the IPU Global Conference in order to make gender equality the focus of all parliaments.

The conference will be followed by another conference on counter-terrorism hosted by the United Nations in Vienna tomorrow. The Syrian delegation participating in the conference includes Dr. Ammar al-Assad, Vice-Chairman of the Arab, Foreign and Expatriate Relations Committee in the People’s Assembly, and the committee’s rapporteur, Shireen al-Yousef and Iyad al-Hassan.
