Abu Dhabi (ST): With the participation of Syria, the deliberations of the Arab Gathering for Cultural Heritage 2020 kicked off in Sharja, the UAE, under the title of ” Genuineness, Society and Preserving Heritage in Arab Thought”
The two-day gathering includes lectures and interventions submitted by the participants via the internet on the challenges faced by the sector of antiquities and heritage in our region. The event will be concluded by granting the Sharjah Prize for the protection of Arab cultural heritage in which Syria is taking part in the project of renovating al-Saqtiya archaeological Souk in Old Aleppo city along with other 14 Arab cultural projects.
Syrian researcher Ma’amoun Abdel Karim lectured on the challenges facing Syrian cultural heritage, Aleppo as an example and reviewed the great archaeological position of this city with its citadel, old souks, mosques, churches, caravansaries and public bathhouses which qualified it to be registered on the UNESCO world heritage list in 1986.
Dr, Abdel Karim also cast light on the adverse consequences of terrorism on the old city of Aleppo and the measures taken by the Directorate of Museums and Antiquities to renovate the monuments that were devastated by the armed terrorist groups.
