Syria: Israeli occupation and acts of aggression in the region are behind current tension and instability

“Israel’s” continued occupation of Arab lands since 1967, its perpetration of genocide and crimes against humanity, and its continuous attacks on the countries of the region are the reason behind the current tensions and instability these countries and are pushing the region towards dangerous escalation with unpredictable consequences, Syria’s Representative to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva Haider Ali Ahmed has stressed.

In a statement during the plenary session on “The human rights situation in Palestine and other occupied Arab territories” within the 57th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Ali Ahmad said that achieving stability and security in the region and stopping the bloodshed of innocent people does not require much research and analysis, but rather has a clear path known to everyone, which is ending the Israeli occupation and stopping its aggression against the peoples and states of the region.

He said that the hypocrisy and double standards of some Western countries, most notably the United States, have reached a point in the Human Rights Council where it has become very difficult to maintain what remains of its credibility.

“These countries provide support and protection to the occupation to continue its genocide against the Palestinian people, in an unprecedented crime in history. This support has extended over the past few days to include the aggression against the brotherly Lebanese people, expressing Syria’s full solidarity with our people in Lebanon in confronting this brutal aggression, and its confidence that the resistance of this steadfast people will not be broken or deviated from its compass. “he added.

Ali Ahmed highlighted that the occupation persists in its repeated terrorist attacks on Syrian territory, targeting residential neighborhoods, infrastructure, and civilian airports, killing Syrian civilians, and disrupting the United Nations humanitarian operations, in addition to what this constitutes as a violation of the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement and Security Council resolutions, including resolutions 242, 338, and 497.

“The Syrian Arab Republic affirms its inalienable right to restore the occupied Syrian Golan, and calls on all countries not to recognize any steps taken by the occupying power to perpetuate its occupation” Ali Ahmad pointed out.
