Damascus, (ST) – The Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade, Dr. Muhammad Samer Al-Khalil discussed with the Chairman of the National Investment Commission in Iraq, Dr. Haider Makiya, mechanisms for developing economic cooperation between the two countries through the portal of enhancing investment cooperation.
During the meeting held yesterday at the Ministry’s building in Damascus, Minister Al-Khalil stressed that investing in available opportunities in many fields requires frequent exchange of visits from interested parties and relevant parties, with the aim of closely examining the horizons and areas of cooperation to reach consensus on the optimal mechanisms for investment.
Minister Al-Khalil pointed out the necessity of reviewing the investment map of both countries. He stressed the importance of the cooperation protocol between the Syrian Investment Authority and the National Investment Authority in Iraq, which is scheduled to be signed during the presence of the Iraqi delegation in Damascus.
Minister Al-Khalil also invited the Iraqi side to attend the first session of the Syrian export exhibition “Expo Syria”, which will provide the opportunity for investors and businessmen to learn about the nature and quality of Syrian export products, and thus opportunities to achieve integration in both trade and investment relations.
For his part, Dr. Makiya pointed out that given the nature and level of capabilities available to investors in both Syria and Iraq, and in light of the importance of cooperation on a complimentary basis, establishing projects on a joint basis may be the most appropriate mechanism.
He said that it will take place during the month of next January holding an event in Baghdad that includes a presentation of the investment opportunities available in Iraq. The Syrian side was invited to attend this event.
