Syria, Iran to enhance cooperation relations

Damascus, (ST) – Prime Minister Hussein Arnous yesterday discussed with an Iranian delegation, headed by the Governor of the Central Bank of Iran, Mohammad Reza Farzin the prospects for strengthening and developing cooperation relations between Syria and Iran in the economic, financial and banking fields.

The two sides also discussed the prospects of facilitating intra-trade transactions, and taking practical and executive measures to reach the highest level of cooperation in this field is based on the directives of the leadership of the two countries, and in a way that achieves the common benefit and interest of the two countries and the two friendly peoples.

During the meeting, it was emphasized that all importance should be given to the development of banking relations as it is a priority in bilateral economic relations, the use of local currencies in commercial exchanges, finding alternatives to payment systems that are used as weapons and sanctions against countries that have sovereign political and economic decisions.

Strengthening cooperation between the two central banks in Syria and Iran was also emphasized as memorandums of understanding (MoU) in this regard to be signed in the near future.

Arnous stressed the need for continuous coordination between the concerned authorities on both sides to establish the necessary facilities in the field of financial and banking cooperation, in a way that achieves the common interest and pushes joint cooperation forward. He indicated the keenness to develop cooperation relations in various economic and development fields and raise them to the level of distinguished strategic political relations between the two countries.

For his part, the Governor of the Central Bank of Iran expressed his country’s desire to develop cooperation with Syria in the financial and banking fields. He referred to the initial understandings reached with the Central Bank of Syria to activate banking cooperation in a way that serves both sides.
