Syria, Iran Discuss Coordination on Counterterrorism, Efforts to Attain Political Settlement

TEHRAN, (ST)-Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Faysal al-Mikdad on Wednesday met with Speaker of the Iranian Shoura Council Ali Larijani in Tehran where they talked about the latest developments in Syria in addition to anti-terror efforts.

 Larijani reiterated his country’s firm stance on supporting the Syrian government and people in the confrontation of terrorism.

  “Iran will spare no effort to support the Syrian government in fighting terrorism and in restoring security and stability to the region, Larijani said, hailing the victories achieved by the Syrian army over terrorist takfiri organizations at different front in Syria.  

On his part, al-Mikdad said fighting terrorism has been a priority to the Syrian people as to clear Syria from this dangerous plague and then start a political process based on respecting Syria’s sovereignty and the Syrian people’s right to self determination away from any foreign interference.

“Counterterrorism needs sincere efforts by all parties and serious work to stop terrorism support in accordance with relevant Security Council resolutions, al-Mikdad clarified.

He thanked Iran, Russia and Hizbollah for supporting Syria in the fight against terrorism which poses serious threat to the security and stability of the region and the entire world.

Al-Mikdad also had a meeting with the Iranian Foreign Minister Jawad Zarif. The two sides discussed coordination on combating terrorism and efforts being exerted to attain a political solution to the crisis in Syria.

Iran’s supportive stance towards Syria in the fight against terrorism and to restore security and stability in the country was also stressed during al-Mikdad’s meeting with Ali Akbar Velayati, the Senior Advisor of Supreme Leader the Iranian Revolution.   

On Tuesday, al-Mikdad and the Iranian Assistant Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hussein Amir Abdullahian discussed the continuity of coordination and consultation between Syria and Iran on issues of common interests and on the fight against terrorism.
