With the aim of restoring the glory of breeding silkworm that characterized Syria historically, a shipment of eggs arrived today from India after the import had stopped for 10 years.
The process of importation was done by the Damascus Chamber of Agriculture and its countryside and the Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform.
The head of the Chamber of Agriculture of Damascus and its countryside, Muhammad Jinan, declared that within the framework of joint cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture to support the agricultural sector, the chamber imported 100 boxes of silkworm eggs and offered them at a symbolic and encouraging price for breeders at 350,000 Syrian pounds per box, as it contains 30 thousand eggs, which is less than the cost prices.
He added that in the coming seasons, this initiative will include all breeders and producers to stimulate and encourage the agricultural sector.
For her part, the head of the Bee and Silk Department in the Plant Protection Directorate of the Ministry of Agriculture, Iman Rostom, indicated that this batch was supplied upon breeders’ requests to return to import an improved strain from India, which are two strains that produce white and yellow silk.
She made it clear that the Ministry distributed mulberry seedlings at incentive prices, amounting to more than 150,000 seedlings, and their cultivation was spread within forest and government sites and agricultural lands, in addition to providing seedlings to breeders for free until this project is being carried out, attracting new breeders and providing them with necessary support.
