Syria Hails Iran-5+1 Group Deal as “Historic”

Damascus– Syria welcomed the historic deal reached in Geneva on Sunday between Iran and the 5+1 group on Iran’s nuclear program, an official source at the Foreign and Expatriates Ministry said.

According to the source, the deal preserves and acknowledges the Iranian people’s right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

“Syria believes that reaching such an accord proves that political solutions to the region’s crises are the best way to attain security and stability in this region away from any kind of foreign interference or use of force,” the source said in a statement to SANA.

“The deal prepares the ground for supporting international efforts to make the Middle East free of all weapons of mass destruction, particularly after Syria had joined the Chemical Weapons Convention,” the source added, pointing out that Israel keeps hindering the attainment of this goal, being the only party which possesses nuclear weapons and refuses to put its nuclear facilities under the control of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The source concluded by extending Syria’s congratulations to the Iranian brotherly people and their wise leadership on the attainment of this historic achievement which reaffirms Iran’s key role in restoring stability and security to the region.

Iran and the P5+1 group earlier today clinched an accord on Iran’s nuclear program, providing for recognizing Iran’s right to enrich uranium and continue its activities in the Iranian nuclear facilities.

The agreement was reached following several days of negotiations between the two sides in Geneva, Switzerland.
