Syria, ESCWA to enhance cooperation in the scientific and technical field

Damascus, (ST) – The Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, Engineer Mohamed Hassan Qatna, discussed with a delegation from the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) the development of cooperation relations for the next stage.

The two sides also discussed the mechanism of scientific and technical intervention to develop the agricultural sector and support producers.

Minister Qatana stressed the importance of the meeting that took place in the Ministry’s building in Damascus to support and enhance future cooperation in terms of benefiting from ESCWA’s expertise to implement many of the projects approved by the Ministry within the agricultural sector development strategy 2030, and linking with other international organizations and research and study centers to implement various projects to achieve integrated development that benefits farmers and rural families.

Minister Qatana pointed to the role of ESCWA in facilitating cooperation with organizations to secure the necessary funding to implement development projects, move from the response phase to early recovery, and invest all available resources to establish projects linking agricultural products, their processing and marketing.

The Head of the delegation, Reem Mohammed Abdel Hadi Al-Najdawi, Head of the Food and Environment Policies Department at ESCWA reviewed their work methods. She stressed the importance of the meeting to learn about the ministry’s needs and vision for advancing the agricultural sector and developing a future action plan for joint work.

Assistant Minister Dr. Fayez Al-Mikdad gave a presentation on the agricultural sector in Syria and suggestions for developing it in cooperation with ESCWA.
