Syria, Cuba to enhance cooperation in the health and pharmaceutical industries

Havana, (ST) – Syrian Ambassador to Cuba Dr. Idris Mia discussed with Eduardo Martinez Diaz, President of Biocopa Pharma Group for Pharmaceutical Industries in Cuba, ways of enhancing cooperation between the two countries in the health field.

During the meeting, which was held at the headquarters of the Biocopa Pharma Group in the capital, Havana, the two sides discussed cooperation mechanisms in the health and pharmaceutical industries, especially in the field of vaccines against the Coronavirus.

Dr. Mia said that the Cuban pharmaceutical industry has achieved remarkable progress especially in the context of the production of vaccines against the Coronavirus. He stressed the need for cooperation between the two countries in this field, especially in light of the current conditions in which the world has faced this pandemic.

It is noteworthy that the biotechnology sector in Cuba has a long history in developing vaccines, as 80% of the vaccines used in the country are home produced and some of them are exported.

During Cuba’s response to the Corona pandemic, five vaccines against Covid 19 were developed, three of which are widely used in other countries such as Iran, Venezuela and Vietnam and Nicaragua.
