Syria condemns US attitude towards the Zionist settlements

DAMASCUS, (ST)_Syria has condemned with the strongest possible terms the US attitude towards the Zionist settlements in the occupied Palestinian lands.

It said in a statement released today by the Ministry of Expatriates and Foreign Affairs that the announcement, which was made on Monday by Mike Pompeo, the Secretary of State, represents Washington’s contempt for the international legitimacy and the continuity of its deep hostility to the Arab nation as well as its unlimited support for the Zionist entity [Israel].

The ministry affirmed that the US attitude is a blatant violation of the international law and the UN resolutions related to the legal status of the occupied lands.

“The Syrian Arab Republic asserts that the US attitude is null and has no legal effect and it is similar to the US attitude towards al-Quds [Jerusalem] and the occupied Syrian Golan,” the ministry added, referring to the huge gap between the US and the international community which is a result of Washington’s arrogance.

It pointed out that only the United States and Israel voted last Friday against a resolution to extend UNRWA’s mandate until 2023. Seven countries abstained and 14 were not present for the preliminary vote at the UN’s Fourth Committee in New York.

Yesterday, the United States effectively backed Israel’s right to build Jewish settlements on the occupied West Bank by abandoning its four-decade position that they were “inconsistent with international law.”
