Syria Condemns Occupation’s Ruling against Syrian Captive Sidqi al-Maqt, Urges Immediate Action to Release Him
DAMASCUS, (ST)- Syria has condemned in the strongest terms the unjust Israeli ruling against the Syrian captive and freedom-fighter Sidqi al-Maqt and dismissed the verdict as a scandal that comes within the framework of the Israeli occupation authorities’ crimes against the Syrian civilians living under the Israeli occupation of the Syrian Golan, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates.
The dean of Syrian and Arab captives in the Israeli occupation jails Sidqi al-Maqt of Majdal Shams in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, was sentenced by the occupation authorities to 14 years in Israeli prison on Tuesday, 16 May.
Al-Maqt previously spent 27 years in Israeli occupation jails without any legal or moral justification. He was release in 2012 and re-arrested in 2015 by the occupation forces for exposing the Israeli occupation’s involvement in the terrorist war imposed on Syria.
In a statement on Wednesday, the ministry said that the new unfair verdict against al-Maqt comes after he highlighted the level of interaction between Israel and the terrorist organizations active in the Syrian territories particularly Jabhat al-Nusra and Daesh. The occupation authorities didn’t allow publishing the details of the case of al-Maqt’s unjust and politicized detention, including the confidential reports and recordings of calls in their possession, the ministry added.
The government of the Syrian Arab Republic urges the international community to adopt necessary legal measures that guarantee the immediate and unconditional release of the Syrian captive Sidqi al-Maqt, and all other Syrian prisoners in the Israeli jails, the ministry said.
It went to say that the Syrian government also calls for implementing the provisions of the 4th Geneva Convention and the international humanitarian law on the Arab territories occupied by the Israeli entity, stressing rejection of Israeli mock trials of prisoners.
The ministry affirmed Syria’s solidarity with the Syrian and Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike in the Israeli jails and called for immediately meeting their demands.
