Syria condemns new US measures targeting the health sector

On January 16th, Syria condemned the new US administration’s measures targeting the Syrian health sector, stressing that these inhumane measures fall within the context of the illegal and immoral blockade imposed on the Syrian people.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates said in a statement on Monday: “The Syrian Arab Republic condemns in the strongest terms the US administration and the so-called Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) of the US Department of Commerce for targeting the health sector in Syria again, by imposing additional restrictions on allowing the sale of equipment or the provision of services, support or spare parts to a large number of Syrian public and private hospitals.”

The Ministry indicated that “these new inhumane measures fall within the context of illegal unilateral coercive measures and the illegal and immoral siege imposed by the United States of America on the Syrian people. These measures once again confirms the invalidity of the allegations promoted by the American administration about the existence of exceptions from these measures humanitarian purposes.”

The Ministry referred to the targeting of hospitals that provide health care to millions of Syrians, including the University Children’s Hospital. The Ministry called for urgent action by the United Nations, the World Health Organization and the International Committee of the Red Cross to put an end to these hostile practices, which represent collective punishment for the Syrian people and a flagrant violation of the provisions of the international law.

The Ministry said that these practices hinder the efforts of the Syrian government and partner international humanitarian organizations to improve the living conditions and provide health care for Syrians.
