Syria, Commonwealth of Dominica to establish diplomatic relations

New York, ST)  – At the headquarters of Syria’s permanent delegation to the United Nations in New York, Syria and the Commonwealth of Dominica signed  on Monday an agreement based on establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The agreement was signed by Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh, the permanent representative of Syria to the United Nations, and Lauren Pence Roberts, the permanent representative of the Commonwealth of Dominica to the international organization.

 Ambassador Sabbagh stressed that the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries represents a prelude of establishing multifaceted bilateral communication and cooperation, coordination and exchange of support in international forums.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Roberts expressed hope that all possible bilateral cooperation opportunities would be explored and developed in various fields.

The agreement indicates the common desire of the two countries to adhere to the universal ideals stipulated in the Charter of the United Nations regarding friendly relations between member states and the keenness to adhere to the high standards stipulated in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and the establishment of bilateral partnerships to strive towards achieving the goals of sustainable development 2030 and exchanging experience for the benefit of the two countries.

It is noteworthy that the Commonwealth of Dominica gained independence from Britain in 1978 and became a member of the United Nations in the same year.
