DAMASCUS- (ST) – Syria’s right to fight terrorism and protect its national sovereignty has been affirmed by the Syrian and Iranian intellectuals who took part in the conference on “The Role of Intellectuals in Enhancing the Steadfastness of the Syrian People”.
“Every state has the right to arrest armed rebels and outlaws who threaten internal peace and security,” Dr. Ahmad Moumeni Rad, Professor of International Law at Tehran University said at the second day of the conference.
“The Syrian state has committed no illegal act in its fight against terrorism,” Rad added, stressing that smuggling terrorist mercenaries into Syria and using them by foreign countries to destroy the country is the illegal behavior.
Rad criticized the international community’s deliberate attempt to ignore the regionally and Western-backed terrorism against Syria, pointing out that this violates key international principles and resolutions which call for fighting terrorism.
Other conferees shed light on how influential the national unity in Syria was in strengthening the steadfastness of the Syrian people. They underlined the contribution of intellectuals, writers, workers, students and civil society initiatives to uncovering the dimensions of the heinous conspiracy hatched against Syria.
They also hailed the Syrian national media which, despite its limited capabilities, has achieved a major jump as regards uncovering the conspiracy.
U.S. Fuels Conflict
Concluding its activities on Monday, the two day conference issued a statement condemning the US role in fuelling the ongoing conflict in Syria through providing all forms of support to armed terrorist takfiri groups to destroy the Syrian state and undermine its geopolitical role in the axis of resistance.
The statement hailed Russia and Iran’s limitless support for the steadfastness of the Syrian people, their efforts to attain a political solution to the crisis in Syria and their rejection of the West’s attempts to create an environment for “military intervention” so as to put hand on the region’s resources.
In their statement, the participants urged dialogue among the Syrians as the only way to find an objective solution to the crisis. They also affirmed the Syrian people’s right to draw up their own future without foreign interference.
The important role of writers, thinkers and journalists in confronting the aggression and the takfiri mindset was also reiterated.
Enhancing friendship, fraternity and dialogue between the Syrian and Iranian intellectuals was called for to serve the common interests of the two counties and solidify the axis of resistance.
The conferees hailed the sacrifices of the Syrian people, army and leadership to protect Syria and highly appreciated the stances of China and peace-loving peoples in support for Syria.
The first day of the conference dealt with the political, cultural, and economic dimension of the confrontation of the crisis and with the role of resistance axis in consolidating steadfastness.
