Syria calls upon WHO to lift unilateral coercive economic measures imposed on Syria

Geneva – Health Minister Nizar Yazigi discussed with WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the efforts exerted by the Ministry for reaching a comprehensive medical coverage amidst challenges represented through the sabotage inflicted on hospitals and medical centers, making them out of service and the unilateral coercive economic measures imposed on Syria, SANA reported.

In a meeting held on the sidelines of the international health association session in Geneva, Yazigi clarified that the Ministry has rehabilitated dozens of damaged medical centers and vital departments in hospitals in the safe areas.

He called upon WHO to exert more efforts for lifting the economic measures imposed on Syria, which are hindering the import of some sorts of medicines and medical equipment.

He stressed importance that the WHO pay special attention to the deteriorating health situation of the Syrians in the occupied Syrian Golan and obligate the Israeli occupation to provide them with health services.

For his part, Ghebreyesus expressed appreciation over the great achievements of the Health Ministry, particularly that it managed to eradicate polio, stressing that WHO is continuing to provide all the requirements of the health sector in Syria.
