GENEVA, Jan.27, (ST)-Syria reiterated that the continuity of the Israeli occupation’s development of its arsenal of weapons, including the nuclear one is the main source of threat to the security and stability in region, which requires from the international community to implement its commitments of the establishment of a free zone from weapons of mass destruction and take serious steps to ensure Israel’s accession to the Non-Proliferation Treaty [NPT].
Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and International Organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Houssam Al-Din Alaa said in a statement on Thursday before the 2022 Disarmament Conference that the world today faces unprecedented challenges and dangers in the light of a security environment characterized by escalating tensions, aggressive policies and military provocations in many world regions and poses threats to international peace and security.
“Syria has attached great importance to making the Middle East a region free of mas destruction weapons , and it was one of the first countries that joined the Nuclear Non-Proliferation treaty of 1969 and the Chemical Weapons Convention of 2013,” Alaa clarified, indicating that the UN security council failed to approve a draft resolution presented by Syria in 2003 to make the ME free of MDW due to the US stance in the council.
The ambassador added that the insistence of the US and “Israel” on rejecting participation in the conference sponsored by the UN in New York, in implementation of the General Assembly’s decision No. 546/73 to establish a free-nuclear weapon zone, shows clear contempt for the international and regional Will.
He asserted the need for international cooperation and coordination and for depending on diplomacy to confront the global dangers, military provocations and the use of force in many areas in the world.
The ambassador underscored that it is urgent to negotiate on a binding legal agreement that gives the world, unconditional and active guarantees to the countries that do not posses nuclear weapons and to preserve the peaceful use of outer space.
He concluded by saying that Syria backs Russia’s proposal to hold comprehensive consultations to pave the way for reactivating the role of the Disarmament Conference.
