With the participation of representatives of 19 countries including Syria, the Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations held on Tuesday its 2nd ministerial meeting in Belgrade within the framework of the meeting of the High ranking meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) held on the 60th anniversary of its foundation.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Faisal Al-Miqdad, who represents Syria in the meeting, said in a statement before the group: “We implement our agreements and decisions, and we dream of a better world based on the UN charter. What we need is general talks about the challenges, which we face now because of the misinterpretation of the UN charter, or the policies of some countries that want to have hegemony over the world’s resources, or the ignorance of peoples’ rights of protecting their interests.”
He clarified that some countries consider the seizure of the lands of other countries as self-defense despite the fact that the UN charter rejects this interpretation. He added that the charter also rejects the allegations of some countries’ rights to adopt unilateral coercive measures against other countries.
The minister pointed out that the goal of the group is to defend the charter and to protect the United Nations from the intentions of the West that seeks to turn the UN into a tool to suppress the ambitions of the developing countries in preserving their sovereignty and independence.
The group issued a statement in which they asserted the importance of the meeting held in Belgrade, expressing deep concern over the systematic threats of pluralism and the move to unilaterality in violation of UN charter.
