Syria calls for ensuring international support and financial resources to remove hidden killer

Syria has renewed its call  for lifting the western unilateral, coercive measures being imposed on the Syrian people and ensuring international support and financial and technical resources to remove mines as well as implementing the agreement reached with the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) including the building of Syrian capabilities far away from politicization and selectivity. 
 
Syria’s permanent representative to the UN, Bassam Sabbagh, said in a statement to Security council in a session about “Measures regarding Mines” that Western coercive measures, which are being imposed on the people of Syria target the people’s basic needs and affect the capability of different main service and economic sectors in performing their duties effectively.
 
“The terrorist war which has been waged on Syria during the latest years left huge impacts on different aspects of the Syrians’ life,” Sabbagh affirmed.
 
He added that despite the liberation of wide areas in Syria from terrorism, the danger still targets the souls of Syrians due to the existence of the remnants of terrorist organizations in some regions, and the existence of wide regions planted with different kinds of mines and explosive devices, which claim the lives of thousands of innocents, including women and children.
 
He clarified that Syria has cooperated with UN agencies like UNICEF and UNMAS, but the field work to dismantle mines remained less than the aspired-for level due to the big obstacles put by western countries which connect any assistance in this field to political provisions that don’t suit the humanitarian feature of removing mines.
 
Sabbagh pointed out that the Ministries of Labour and Social Affairs and Health work on meeting the needs of the people, who were affected by the mines and lost some of their limbs. 
 
He concluded by saying: “12  centers affiliated to the Syrian government and civil associations ensure free medical care and artificial limbs to the victims of mines in all governorates, but they face  a serious shortage of medical equipment. Therefore, there must be international support and financial resources to remove mines.”
