Syria calls for avoiding western countries’ initiatives that may lead to more chaos in international relations

NEW YORK, Nov.15, (ST)- Syria’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh has asserted that exploiting the General Assembly to manipulate the work of rules within the international organization and impose new, illegal and unprecedented mechanisms through pressure and blackmail has become a constant practice for Western countries to target member states that do not follow their political agendas.

He indicated that the escalation of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine came as a result of the West fueling the Ukrainian extremist tendency and continuing to incite neo-Nazism and supplying them with weapons and various equipment, which has become a threat to the security of the region and to the safety of its countries.

Sabbagh’s remarks came during the emergency session, which was held yesterday by the General Assembly on “the situation in Ukraine.

“It has become clear that Western countries insist on reinforcing political polarization within the UN and deepening division among its member states by repeatedly calling for such meetings that aim only at serving the hostile agenda of Western countries towards Russia,” he said.

The diplomat reiterated Syria’s position that resolving regional and international disputes and crises should not be done through the practice of misinformation, policies of isolation, exclusion and imposition of sanctions, or through the establishment of politicized mechanisms, but rather through diplomacy and dialogue and avoiding any initiatives that may lead to the escalation of the disputes.

Sabbagh pointed out that the draft resolution presented to the General Assembly today comes within the framework of a series of unbalanced, biased and provocative decisions by which the U.S, and its Western allies are pushing to target Russia, which poses a dangerous state of hostility represented by the seizure of Russian sovereign and assets that they had previously frozen.

He affirmed that the failure of all previous attempts to break Russia’s will pushed those countries to resort to other ways of blackmail against Russia by stealing its frozen funds within the framework of what they call a “compensation mechanism for Ukrainian ,” but its real goal is to pay the cost of Ukraine’s purchases of Western weapons.

Sabbagh in addition emphasized that the Western countries’ double-standard policy led them to focus on specific issues that serve their agendas, and in turn ignore their responsibilities for their illegal acts that they committed during the past decades in a number of member states in Asia, Africa and Latin America, in an attempt to evade accountability for the grave damages. which they caused to those countries, including Syria.

He clarified that the establishment of such a mechanism is nothing but clear evidence of the extent of the political hypocrisy the western countries have reached.

Sabbagh called on the member States to be aware of the dangers of being drawn into efforts to establish such illegal and illegitimate mechanisms that are not going in line with the powers of the General Assembly and the provisions of the UN as they will only lead to creating more chaos in international relations.
