Syria at NAM Conference: Presidential Elections Held on Basis of Sovereign Constitutional Obligation

ALGIERS- The presidential elections in Syria are being held on the basis of a sovereign constitutional obligation and they are subjected to the will of the Syrian people, the only source of true legitimacy, Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister Husam Eddin Ala has said.

Ala, who was speaking during the opening ceremony of the 17th conference of the Non-Alignment Movement (NAM) Foreign Ministers in Algeria, said that some countries, which took part in shedding the blood of the Syrian people, have tried to impede the Syrian presidential elections in the Syrian embassies abroad and to stand against the will of the Syrian people.

He added that seeking interference in the internal affairs of countries is done under different pretexts like the so-called right of “Humanitarian Intervention and the Responsibility to Protect”, stressing the involvement of some NAM member countries in inciting foreign intervention and military aggression on Syria and in worsening the living condition of the Syrian people by adopting unilateral economic measures with no legal or moral basis against Syria.

He clarified that “Syria has been targeted over the past three years by terrorists coming from more than 80 countries to commit massacres against the Syrian people and that some states, known of their sponsoring of terrorism and takfiri and extremist fatwas, have exploited their oil resources and the potentials of their peoples to encourage, finance, arm, train and send terrorists and mercenaries to Syria.”

Ala stressed the Syrian government’s keenness to meet the basic needs of the Syrian citizens despite the unfair unilateral measures imposed on the country.

He renewed Syria’s stance on the need to hold the international conference on establishing a nuclear weapon-free zone in the Middle East.
