Syria appeals for UNSC strict stance towards terrorism

DAMASCUS,(ST)_Foreign and Expatriates Ministry has sent a letter to the UN Security Council on the three terrorist bombings hit Damascus in April, calling for adopting strict stance to combat terrorism everyplace across the world.

The ministry underscores that diverse support for al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist groups and the UN inaction are behind the continuity of the terrorist acts.

“Syrian Arab Republic reminds of its call, mentioned in all previous letters sent to the UN Security Council, for condemning the terrorist crimes explicitly and pressing states that fund, train and arm terrorist groups to stop their support,” the letter read.

Heavy casualties

The three terrorist bombings took place on April 8-29-30 in al-Shahbandar square, al-Mazzeh, and al-Marjeh districts respectively caused martyrdom of at least 32 civilians and left more than 139 others wounded.

The ministry clarified that the terrorist bombings, which happened in the peak of the rush hour in the city, had targeted residential and commercial areas and caused serious damages at the scenes.

It pointed out random mortar shells fired by gunmen on residential areas, stressing that dozens have been killed and hundreds wounded by the shells.  

Evidence of failure

In addition, the ministry said that the April 29th– terrorist bombing, which targeted the convoy of Prime Minister Dr. Wael al-Halqi , who heads the ministerial committee entrusted with materialization of the political plan to resolve the crisis, unveils the purpose of the armed groups and those who support them.

It added: “this coward act, which reflects these groups’ rejection for political solution, is but an evidence of their failure as the committee has made progress in talks held with political and social parties, which determine to take part in political process.”
