Symposium on “Aesthetics of Arabic calligraphy” held in Damascus

The artist, calligrapher Jalal Al-Ghazzi, reviewed the developments of the Arabic calligraphy throughout history during a symposium entitled “Aesthetics of Arabic Calligraphy” held recently at the Cultural Center in Barzeh.

During the symposium, Al-Ghazzi pointed to  the stages of Arabic calligraphy development by the beginnings of the Islamic era which produced several types of calligraphy, reviewing  the most important scripts and the characteristics and features of each of them including , Kufic ,  Naskh , Diwani script and the Ruq’a script, which is considered the simplest type of script.

The calligrapher Al-Ghazi said in a statement to SANA: ” This symposium aims to spread the culture of Arabic calligraphy and raise awareness about its importance and the necessity of paying attention to it, especially for young generation through introducing it into the education curricula in schools, and fine arts faculties as well as supporting calligraphers through holding exhibitions for their artworks.

In her turn, Lubna Haddad, Director of the Cultural Center in Barzeh, stressed that  the symposium  focused on the vital and important role of Arabic calligraphy which is the cultural and civilizational incubator of our entire Arabic language.
