The Arab Cultural Center in Abu Rummaneh area in Damascus organized a symposium and an exhibition on the “Damascene Al-Aghabany craft” with the participation of craftsmen and researchers in history.
The symposium focused of this craft and its history, which dates back to ancient civilizations, and explained how this traditional craft is still alive in our present time. The symposium also reviewed the types of “the craft of Aghabany”, its drawings, and the way to promote it.
Dr. Ammar Al-Nahar, the head of the History Department at Damascus University, spoke in the symposium about the importance of this traditional Damascene craft, which means decoration on cloth. He stressed the need to preserve it.
Researchers in the Damascene folklore, Dr. Khaled Al-Fayyad, and engineer Muhammad Dabbour, said during their participation in the symposium that the Muslim Arabs inherited and developed this craft.
for his part craftsman Anas Ghannam, spoke about “Aghabani” craft as one of the most important Syrian textile crafts that developed over time.
Ghannam, also explained that this Damascene craft, like other crafts, needs raw materials of fabrics and threads, stressing the need to find markets to promote Al-Aghabani products, which may contributes to the continuity of producing it.
On the sidelines of the symposium, an exhibition including models of tablecloths of different sizes, the longest of which ranged between 1 to 4 meters, was held
