Syrian-Cuban talks on enhancing agricultural cooperation held on the sidelines of FAO Conference

Rome (ST): On the sidelines of the 43rd session of the General Conference of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), being held in Rome from 1 to 7 July, the Syrian Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform Mohamed Hassan Qatana discussed with his Cuban counterpart Perez Brito cooperation in the agricultural field and the possibility of trade exchange through bartering, activating the signed agreements and concluding new agreements according to the agricultural reality in the interest of both sides.

During the meeting, it was agreed to hold virtual meetings between technicians in the two ministries, to review successful experiences and to exchange visits to discuss issues of common interest.

During a round table held to discuss the issue of flood risk management and its effects on agricultural production and economic and social aspects, Minister Qatana reviewed the procedures adopted by the Syrian government in the field of watershed management systems. He pointed out that the government built a number of water dams in the coastal region, that is characterized by high rate of rainfall, to limit torrential rains and drifts from the top of the mountains to the valleys, in addition to other dams on the streams and waterways in the Badia region, which is located in dry areas and has a low rainfall rate in order to collect water for use in agriculture and animal husbandry and to prevent floods.
