Syria participates in the 2nd Baghdad International Conference on Combating Drugs

The Second Baghdad International Conference on Combating Drugs kicked off on Monday in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad,  with the participation of the interior ministers of Iraq’s neighboring countries, including the Minister of Interior, Major General Muhammad al-Rahmoun.
In his speech at the opening of the conference, Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani confirmed that the Iraqi government has initiated measures to dismantle drug gangs, indicating Iraq’s readiness for joint coordination with neighboring countries.

Al-Sudani stressed, according to the Iraqi News Agency, the importance of raising the level of coordination and joint cooperation in confronting the deadly drug scourge on societies and the economy, as well as its effects on the stability of the entire region.

He noted that Iraq is putting its expertise and intelligence capabilities in the field of combating terrorism into this constructive cooperation.

Al-Sudani pointed out that drugs were used in recruiting terrorists in order to create an unsafe region, stop development in this region and weaken homelands, pointing out that the effects of drugs are no different in their results from wars, displacement, and the attempt to uproot peoples from their homelands , exactly as the ongoing Israeli aggression against Gaza and Palestinian people .

Al-Sudani called for unifying efforts and strengthening joint coordination so that “our societies be free of this social disease”, expressing at the same time his country’s support for every effort aimed at eliminating hotbeds of drug poisons and their manufacturing centers and bringing drugs promoters and dealers to justice because it is a cross-border crime.

In turn, Iraqi Interior Minister Abdul Amir al-Shammari said in his speech, according to the Iraqi News Agency: The drug threat is strongly increasing, and we need an international document to contain this scourge, stressing the need for cooperation and coordination to confront the drug threat.

Al-Shammari said that without fruitful cooperation, the drug threat will continue, pointing out that the Iraqi Ministry of Interior has initiated numerous measures and well-thought-out plans to pursue drug traffickers and it overthrow major drug traffickers, indicating that memorandums of understanding have been concluded with many countries to confront the drug phenomenon.
Al-Shammari met last night with Minister Rahmoun and discussed with him issues of common interest between Syria and Iraq.
