Syria calls on UN member states, agencies to support its efforts to confront the repercussions of the devastating earthquake
On February 6th, Syria appealed to the UN member states, General Secretariat, agencies and funds, the International Committee of the Red Cross and all international humanitarian organizations to extend a helping hand to Syria and support the efforts being exerted by the Syrian government to face the repercussions of the devastating earthquake.
Syria thanked the countries and organizations that have expressed their solidarity.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates said in a statement: “Syria was exposed at dawn on Monday, February 6, 2023, to a devastating earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale, which led, in initial toll, to hundreds of deaths, thousands of injuries, and the collapse of dozens of residential buildings.”
“The Syrian Arab Republic mobilized all ministries and state institutions to face the effects of this earthquake and the aftershocks that followed, which are still continuing,” the ministry said.
The ministry added: “Syria appeals to the UN member states, General Secretariat, agencies and specialized funds, the International Committee of the Red Cross and other humanitarian action partners from international governmental and non-governmental organizations to provide assistance and support the Syrian government’s efforts to face the humanitarian disaster, especially with regard to works of searching for living persons and rescuing those trapped under the rubble, recovering the bodies, and providing food and health services and shelter and food supplies to those affected by this natural disaster across the Syrian Arab Republic.
The ministry concluded by saying: “The government of the Syrian Arab Republic expresses thanks the countries and organizations that have expressed their solidarity with Syria and its people and extended their condolences over the victims of the devastating earthquake, and expressed their readiness to provide assistance to the Syrian people in these difficult circumstances.”
