Supplying Syrian opposition with arms ‘illogical’, says Zasypkin

BEIRUT,(ST)_Russia’s Ambassador to Lebanon has said that supplying the armed opposition in Syria with weapons will obstacle reaching political solution to the crisis.

Alexander Zasypkin told yesterday Tehran-based al-Alam T.V channel :” some western countries’ seeking to arm opposition would complicate the matter…Russia and the US came to an understanding about reaching a political settlement, so the steps being taken by Britain and France to escalate the crisis in Syria is illogical.”

He added that it’s impossible to know to whom the weapons would reach as there are several armed groups in Syria, stressing the need for encouraging everyone in Syria to take part in dialogue.

“All efforts must aim to bring about a political solution to the crisis,” Zasypkin said, noting that his country has called, since the very beginning, for reaching a political solution far away from arming opposition.

He sees that the US is serious in negotiation to settle the crisis in Syria.

“We have convinced the American side of reaching a political settlement to the crisis,” the Russian Ambassador said.
