Cairo, (ST) – The head of the Suez Canal Authority, Lieutenant General Osama Rabie, announced that, the ships stranded at the Suez Canal crossing will begin to cross the canal, after the container ship “Evergiven” that was stranded in the Suez Canal since last Tuesday was dislodged. He added that, the navigation was resumed its work normally in the Canal.
The Egyptian TV quoted Rabie as saying that, more than 400 ships are waiting to cross the canal because of the closure of shipping traffic due to the delinquency of the Panamanian container ship in the canal, indicating that the delinquent “Evergiven” vessel was not damaged and is able to sail again in the canal.
Rabei also explained that the area where the ship ran aground was also not affected.
Canal officials informed shipping agencies that convoys of ships would resume sailing in both directions.
The 400-meter-long Evergiven vessel with a carrying capacity of 224,000 tons was suspended on March 23 in the Suez Canal and blocked the waterway connecting the Mediterranean with the Red Sea.
