Sudanese Ministry of Culture and Information: Soldiers arrested most of the ministers

Khartoum (ST): The Sudanese Ministry of Culture and Information announced today that “military forces” have arrested most of the cabinet members and civilians from the Sovereignty Council.

The statement published by the ministry on its Facebook page did not specify whether Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok was among the detainees, but media reports indicated that he was under house arrest. This is the first official statement issued by the government headed by Hamdok after the dawn arrests.

Meanwhile, Sudanese demonstrators blocked today many roads in the streets of the capital, Khartoum, in protest against the arrest of officials in the executive authority.

According to Agence France-Presse, the demonstrators blocked roads and set tires on fire at a time when the Internet was cut off from the country.

The Sudanese Vocational Association stated in a statement that “there is a military move aimed at seizing power,” calling on the Sudanese “to go out to the streets and prepare to resist any military coup, regardless of the forces behind it.”

Reuters news agency quoted sources from the family of Faisal Mohamed Saleh, media advisor to the Sudanese Prime Minister, that a military force stormed Saleh’s house and arrested him early Monday.
