Sudan’s Army Forms 2-Year Military Council to Lead the Country

KHARTOUM- Sudan’s Defense Minister, General Awad Mohammad Ahmed Ibn Auf has announced that President Omer Al-Basher of Sudan has stepped down.

According to the Sudanese News Agency (SUNA), General, Ibn Auf, in statement issued Thursday, announced the formation of a two years-Military Council, the suspension of the transitional constitution for 2005, the declaration of a state of emergency for three months and a one-month curfew from 10 pm to 4 am.

He also announced the closure of the airspace and crossings for 24 hours, in addition to resolving the institution of the presidency and the Council of Ministers and the Parliament and the Council of State and State governments and their legislative councils and assigning the governors to carry out tasks and assigning the undersecretaries of ministries to run the work, SUNA said.

 The statement affirmed the continuation of work in the Judiciary, prosecution, the Constitutional Court, Sudan embassies abroad, diplomatic missions and international organizations and agencies, pledging to maintain dignity and human rights.

The statement announced a comprehensive cease-fire, called on the armed movements to join the process of government in the country, affirming the Military Council ‘s commitment to preserve public life without exclusion.

The Army affirmed its keenness to pave the way for peaceful handling of power, building of political parties, holding of a free and transparent elections in the end iof the transitional period and issuance of the permanent constitution.
