Sudan declares three-month state of emergency over floods

KHARTOUM, (ST)- Sudan’s Security and Defense Council has declared a state of emergency in the country for three months because of the floods, that have killed 99 people this year, and considered Sudan as a natural disaster zone, according to the Sudanese News Agency (SUNA).

 The agency reported on Saturday that the council decided to form a supreme committee, led by the Ministry of Labor and Social Development, to deal with the ramifications of the floods.

The Sudanese Minister of Labor and Social Development Lena el-Sheikh said that floods this year have killed 99 people, injured 46 others, inflicted damage on more than half a million citizens and caused total and partial collapse to more than 100,000 homes.

According to the minister, the rates of floods and rain for this year exceeded the records set during the years 1946 and 1988, with expectations of continued rising indicators.
