Success of Russian-American Agreement on Syria May Lead to Rise of Global Anti-Terror Alliance

MOSCOW, (ST)- The success of the Russian-American agreement on Syria may lead to the rise of a global anti-terror alliance, Russia’s Permanent Representative at the United Nations Vitaly Churkin has announced.

Interviewed by RT channel on Wednesday, Churkin said “I think that if the Geneva latest agreement goes well we will be so close to establishing a global alliance to fight terrorism as President Vladimir Putin has suggested.”

The Russian diplomat urged Washington to use its influence to push towards separating the US-backed “opposition groups” from Jabhat al-Nusra.

On the latest report by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) regarding the use of chemicals for military purposes in Syria, Churkin said “the report rises many questions and it includes no real principles to come up with conclusions, so in order to make serious accusations there must be convincing evidence.”

The US and Russian top diplomats John Kerry and Sergey Lavrov announced on September 9 that they reached a new agreement on Syria following 14-hour talks in Geneva. The agreement provided for a truce that excludes “Daesh” and “Jabhat al-Nusra”. It also provided for separating between the terrorists and the so-called “opposition”, for specifying the areas in which Russian and American warplanes will target terrorists, for establishing a joint center to coordinate airstrikes and for resuming the political process to solve the crisis in Syria.
