DAMASCUS, (ST)- The Syrian medical sector has obtained a new medical achievement after the success of the first bone marrow transplantation for a Syrian child at Tishreen Military Hospital in Damascus.
This has been achieved despite years of terrorist war on Syria, despite the spread of coronavirus pandemic in the country and despite the challenges facing the medical sector because of the western sanctions.
Taim Shaddoud, a 4 years old Syrian child, has suffered Aplastic Anemia. His sister, Leen, who is five and a half years old, revived his hope in recovery from this disease by donating part of her stem cells to her brother, according to Dr. Suleiman Suleiman, head of the Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit at the hospital.
Dr. Suleiman told SANA that “we started with studying the condition of the donor sister. It was a great challenge because the donor is a little girl, but we overcame this challenge thanks to the competence of the physicians and the technical staff.”
