The devastating earthquake that struck Syria in the early hours of 6th February was also felt in Cyprus, reminding us of the close geographical proximity between the two countries. Sadly even today, two weeks after that dreadful day, we continue experiencing distressing seismic activity here in Syria and the wider region.
From the first hours after the initial earthquake, the Crisis Centre of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus was activated and in coordination with the Civil Defense and other relevant authorities of the Republic, sought to ascertain the immediate needs of the Syrian people in order to ensure that the necessary humanitarian assistance would be dispatched as soon as humanly possible.
Naturally the Cypriot public was immediate in expressing its solidarity and compassion by donating aid in bulk and numbers. This immediacy of course proves the time long connections of Cypriots to the neighboring Syrian people. So far, three flights by Cyprus Airways have transported gratis several tons of aid to Beirut airport, consisting of medicine and medical consumables, which subsequently have been or are being delivered by road to the stricken areas in Syria. I wish to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to the management of the company. Moreover, in the coming days the main bulk of tens of tons of assistance collected will be transported by ship to Lebanon and from there on to assigned areas in Syria by key consignees.
Considering that Cyprus is an EU member state, the EU Civil Protection Mechanism has been the vital link in the whole process, ensuring the smooth implementation of the various stages, in synergy with the Lebanese Red Cross and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent. I would hence like to express my Government’s deep appreciation to all concerned for the long and tireless hours put in this hugely important effort.
Apart from the assistance offered by the Government of Cyprus, numerous companies and organized groups have generously contributed to our efforts including the notable Syrian community on the island, who have selflessly donated foodstuff, medicine, clothing and other items. This gesture is obviously reflective of the true spirit of camaraderie between our peoples in times of need.
The road ahead will be long as well as arduous. While our thoughts and prayers are with the Syrian people, Cyprus is and will remain steadfast in its commitment to persist, with all efforts and all ways, aiming to alleviate this tremendous suffering to the greatest extent possible.
