Speaker Hails Iran’s Growing Ties with Russia

TEHRAN– Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani lauded close cooperation between Tehran and Moscow on the regional issues, and hailed Russia’s role in the achievement of Iran nuclear deal, from which the US withdrew in May.

In a Wednesday meeting with chairman of the Russian State Duma’s foreign relations committee in Tehran, Larijani hailed the growing trade ties between the two countries, saying there are ample good ideas for the enhancement of ties, according to Tasnim News Agency.

Pointing to the close cooperation between Iran and Russia on the regional issues, the speaker said Russia played a good role in the achievement of the deal also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Since the US has obstructed the implementation of the nuclear deal, new grounds should be provided to carry out the accord, Larijani added.

He also noted that Iran and Russia can join hands to settle the crisis in Syria.

For his part, the visiting Russian lawmaker stressed the need for close interaction with Iran considering the two countries’ geopolitical position.

Leonid Slutsky also proposed the idea of formation of a joint commission to expand bilateral ties.

He also slammed the US exit from the Iran nuclear deal as an unwise move.

Moscow and Tehran enjoy strategic cooperation in Syria, as Russia acknowledges Iran’s role in the regional stability and security, Slutsky concluded.
