Damascus: (ST): The Ministry of Information and the Syrian Commission for Family and Population Affairs launched the “Speak Up” campaign to raise awareness to issues of violence, especially domestic violence, to educate battered women about their rights guaranteed by law, and the services available to them in the Commission’s Family Protection Unit, and to educate the community about the need to combat violence against women and to report any such case.
The launch of the campaign comes after the death of Ayat Al-Rifai who was subjected to violence by her husband and his family, which received a great response from the Syrian community and demanded punishment for the abusers.
In a seminar organized in the Reda Saeed Conference Hall at the University of Damascus to launch the campaign, the head of the Syrian Commission for Family and Population Affairs, Samar al-Sibai, indicated that there are many cases similar to the case of Ayat in society to raise awareness about it.
Al-Sibai stated that violence increased during the years of the war in all its forms, indicating that most of the cases that the commission deals with are reported by the local community, and it has allocated a phone number to communicate about any case of domestic violence, knowing that all reports are confidential.
