Sousan and Vershinin review the Syrian-Russian relations and developments in the regional and international arenas

Within the framework of regular political consultations between the Syrian and Russian sides, the Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Dr. Ayman Sousan, today held talks with the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin on the relations between the two friendly countries, the latest developments in the regional and international arenas. Views were identical regarding topics of discussion.
Sousan expressed highly appreciated Russia’s supportive stances towards Syria in various political, military and economic fields, reiterating Syria’s standing by the Russian Federation in the face of the Atlantic aggression seeking to maintain the West’s hegemony over international decision-making.For his part, Vershinin affirmed the continued Russian support for Syria, for the preservation of Syrian sovereignty and unity, and for non-interference in Syria’s internal affairs, stressing that what happened in Syria and Russia is inseparable from what the world is witnessing in terms of attempts by the United States and Western countries to create tensions and fuel conflicts in order to control world affairs and plunder its wealth.

The two sides expressed satisfaction with the steady development of relations between the two countries in various fields, and the strengthening of the strategic partnership between them. The importance of continuing coordination and consultation between the two countries regarding various developments in the international arena was emphasized as well as the importance of joint action to restore respect for international legitimacy in the face of American and Western attempts to distort this legitimacy in order to serve the Atlantic agendas of Western domination.

The two sides condemned the West’s behavior of politicizing the humanitarian aid file and the return of the displaced Syrians. The two sides stressed the need to respect Syrian sovereignty and support the Syrian state’s efforts to address the effects of the unjust war targeting it.

After the meeting and in response to the journalists’ questions about the situation in Idlib and northern Syria, Dr. Sousan indicated that Idlib will return to be under the Syrian state sovereignty, and normal life will return to its people away from the influence of terrorist groups, pointing out that what is happening in Idlib Governorate must end and there will be no place for terrorism on any Syrian territory.

Sousan stressed that “when there is an acknowledgment by the Turkish side of the principle of withdrawal from the Syrian land, according to a specific timetable, and when the withdrawal starts and cooperation appears in order to combat terrorism, as they say … then we can talk about a road map for the situation there.”

For his part, Vershinin said: “We attach great importance to the meeting with President Bashar Al-Assad and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Dr. Faisal Al-Mikdad, and to the detailed consultations that were held with Dr. Sousan,” noting that the talks revolved around exchanging views and coordination on important regional and international issues.

Vershinin stressed that the two countries cooperate in various international forums, and defend the same principles, pointing out that during the meetings in Syria, the two sides discussed the very important issues of cooperation in international forums in New York and Geneva, and followed up on what was agreed upon and accomplished during the visit of President Bashar Al-Assad to Moscow last March, praising the results of these meetings.
